It’s Comics Sunday!
I am actually foaming-fangirl obsessed with Kevin Wada’s fashionista redesigns of X-Men characters. Above is his rendition of female Marvel mutants as famous opera heroines. Absolutely read the full description behind this breathtaking piece on his blog but here’s a cheat sheet:
Mystique as the Queen of the Night
Psylocke as Cio-Cio San
Storm as Aida
Boom Boom as Cunegonde
Shadowcat as Octavian
Jean Grey as Violetta
Rogue as Carmen

Kevin Wada and fellow illustrator and friend, Max Wittert, decided to do a fashionista take on characters from X-Men to sell at APE 2011 and created a fantastic series of prints.
Let me make two things clear:
1) I. FUCKING. LOVE. ALL. OF. THIS.
2) This is Part 5 of 5 posts today.
Featured above: Rogue, Ms. Marvel, Emma Frost, Polaris, Storm, Psylocke, and Sage.

I’ve always been a Gambit/Rogue fan but what drew me to this piece by Karen from Canada is the simple switch of props: he has her glove, she has his playing card (and by extension, his ability). Simple details that betray a deep trust.

Cale Atkinson calls this piece “Future of Joker” and explains:
“This is a pic I just did tonight for this week’s Sketch Taverns topic. The topic was to draw any DC comics character in the year 2099 (I believe Marvel had a 2099 series). So I figured it was obvious that the future of the Joker and Harley Quinn was to become X-Men! Was there ever any other option? I think not!”
Brilliant!

Gambit and Rogue are basically the Romeo/Juliet love storyline in the realm of the Marvel universe. If Romeo’s family were a band of thieves and Juliet had a shapeshifting adopted mother who extorts her for her power-draining abilities.
Ivanna Matilla did an amazing job with their facial expressions here. Rogue’s worry but desire are clear as well as Gambit’s reckless wanting.

I used to think Rogue had one of the more complex histories in the X-Men gang but Marvel has proved me wrong over and over and over.
Regardless, I heart this depiction of her along with the visages of her two biggest influences, Mystique and Gambit. Tis a collab between Jamie Fay and Rey Arzeno. Cheers, boys!

Marcio Takara’s wonderful depiction of the X-Men is the best bouquet I could ever receive. I love the details and the clean lines!

I’ve made it no secret that Rogue and Gambit are my favourite superhero couple ever and I think this piece of alt art by Eric Basaldua (line art) and Penichet (coloring) is simply wonderful.

Here’s a sweet watercolour alt art of two super X-Men, Rogue and Gambit, painted by Thony Silas Dias de Aguiar.

Yep, another reblog from the Tumblr of the talented Watermelonwings!
Though these series of X-Men doodles are more casual than some of her other pieces, I’m rather fond of them anyhow.

LOVE the chemistry between these two X-Men and so does John Tyler Christopher, who can actually draw.
As to what motivated this picture, Christopher writes that he “wanted to capture a moment of tenderness with a hint of something sinister. Showing the price of a forbidden love.”
