To go with this illustrious painting, artist Diana Huh poignantly comments, “This is based on The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. This book is really, really important to me. Its message really changed me at a crucial time in my life.”
She also adds this lovely quote from the book:
So the Little Prince, despite all the goodwill of his love, had soon come to mistrust her. He had taken seriously certain inconsequential remarks and had grown very unhappy.… “In those days, I didn’t understand anything. I should have judged her according to her actions, not her words. She perfumed my planet and lit up my life. I should never have run away! I ought to have realized the tenderness underlying her silly pretensions. Flowers are so contradictory! But I was too young to know how to love her.”

This delicate set of panels was inspired by Alphonse Mucha’s distinct art nouveau style. Gina Biggs created separately each of these flower-framed portraits of the more well known companions of Doctor Who: Rose Tyler, Martha Jones, Donna Noble, and Amy Pond.

Reblogged from the artist himself, Daniel Krall, this phenomenal re-imagination of Jessie and James of Team Rocket was his contribution to the Pokémon Battle Royale show at the Light Grey Art Lab Gallery in Minneapolis.
Gonna go out on a limb and say he NAILED IT.

It’s Disney Wednesday!

I am quickly becoming obsessed with Kathryn “SpicyStewedDemon” Hudson’s unique art style. Especially when it comes to her Disney fan art.

Her descriptions accompanying her superhero renditions of Disney ladies are great too:

  • A mild mannered librarian by day, Belle transforms by the power of The Rose at night! This super justice princess uses her magical mirror to show evil doers the ugliness within themselves; sucking them into a terrible illusion of their own making.
  • Under the secret identity as Um from Umbridge, Alice patrols the borders of Wonderland. Surrounded by madness, Um takes one sip from her magic potion, and she’s as tall as a house! Good for catching that pesky cat. Another sip, and she’s as small as a mouse, able to sneak and hide anywhere!
  • Since the rise of Jafar, the streets of Agrabah of overrun with villains and thugs. One woman stands for justice! Called ‘Street Mouse’ by Jafar’s henchmen, to the people of her desperate city she is simply known as “The Princess”
  • It is whispered about through the jungle. A wild woman who defends the creatures of the forest. Poachers beware, Jungle Jane is on the prowl!

Sleeping Beauty gets some revenge in this fun illustration by Tumblr artist Jimbopunk who adds:
“Disney left out all the parts when Phillip was sleeping, but I’m willing to BET he took one hell of a nap after battling that dragon and…uhhh….EVERYTHING ELSE.”

Sprite009 created this otherworldly illustration for The Beauty and the Beast story and adds:
“The aim of this painting was a complete deviation from the preconceived idea you have of a subject. Personally, I have ALWAYS associated The Beauty and the Beast with the colour red (fire and roses) so I decided to try painting this with an opposite colour scheme (blue and water).”

Yasahime is an artist whose style really attracts my eyes. Something about the delicate lines and muted colours and precise details makes me want to stare at her art forever.
Although the Alice Lolita isn’t a new concept, it won’t get old for me if Yasahime keeps drawing it!

How’s this for a reboot of the Sleeping Beauty fairy tale? Algenpfleger’s painting looks like a screenshot from a video game or even a movie.

It’s interesting how most anyone raised in Western culture will recognize the phrase “painting the roses red”. Even if you haven’t read any of Lewis Carroll’s books or seen any of the movie/TV/video game adaptations of Alice in Wonderland, you know what the phrase means thanks to simple osmosis.
It’s memes like that that are always the most difficult to learn when studying a foreign language. You can study English grammar until the cows come home but it’ll take decades for you to accumulate all the cultural references that pepper our everyday speech.
Anyway, this simple but gorgeous piece of alt art by Kei Acedera sparked all these thoughts and also makes me smile.

More characters cosplaying as other characters!
Paul Jaworski expertly drew this picture of Roger and Jessica (from Who Framed Roger Rabbit?) as Jack and Rose from Titanic.

Magicharu created this lovely depiction of an oft-overlooked Disney character: the singing White Rose from Alice in Wonderland.
Here’s a video of the flowers’ song: link.
I love that the most voted up comment is, “the purple flower with her stupid glasses is a freakin BITCH!”

Jason Mclellan painted this exquisite alt art of Emma Frost and Cyclops, a pairing in the X-Men universe(s) that was fairly doomed thanks to Scott’s inability to get over Jean Grey and Emma’s inability to not be manipulative and cynical.

It’s TV Show Avatar: The Last Airbender Monday!
Who’s excited for Legend of Korra? I FUCKIN AM!
I’ll let the artist, RoseMuse describe her ambitious and gorgeous piece of alt art:
“I basically wanted to try out different art styles, and attempted to match up the characters with their cultural counterparts. It was really a bit difficult trying to capture these styles.
Sokka and Katara were sort of inspired by Isaia’s art and various Inuit/Alaska Native wood-block prints.
Aang’s style is based on Buddhist-influenced paintings and art - similar to what is seen in Tibet/the Himalayas.
Zuko - I dunno. I’ve heard lots of different ideas on the origin of Fire Nation style. While there are some Japanese influences, I’ve always really felt that it’s had a Thailand and Indonesian sort of feel to it all. I found quite a few pictures of old Thai murals and architecture that have an unusually similar look.
Toph is inspired by Chinese ink paintings - lots of loose lines and watery colors.”
