It’s Anime Friday!
How cool are Juan Andres Saavedra’s windows??? Also, I’m loving the Scott Pilgrim-esque version of Maka from Soul Eater.

Ya-na of Russia painted this delicious pop art for that visually pretty movie I still haven’t seen: Sucker Punch.
So I have a thing for school girls. Doesn’t mean I have a thing for plot holes.

It’s Movie Thursday!
Although this movie’s plot was like Inception vomiting on itself in a strip club, it’s hard to deny that Sucker Punch’s visuals were awfully pretty. Much like Mik4g’s above fan art is awfully pretty.

This piece of alt art of Baby Doll (played by Emily Browning) from Sucker Punch (2011) was masterfully painted in Photoshop by Warren Louw.
Though the anime/steam punk/fantasy/burlesque thematic atmosphere of the movie seemed right up my alley, I was discouraged from actually seeing it in theatres thanks to a review discussing the contradiction of female power as written by a fan boy who uses rape as a plot device and a shock tool without ever really understanding the catastrophic effects such an attack has on a woman’s entire life.
In his review for Collider.com, Matt Goldberg nails it when he appropriately asks:
“Can we please stop pretending that giving a hot girl in skimpy clothing a weapon and letting her destroy shit constitutes “female empowerment”?  Can we just take that notion, murder it with a shovel and bury it in a shallow grave?  Here’s what constitutes female empowerment: well-written, memorable female characters.”
